Italian Crossbow Federation
It was founded on February 13th, 1966, under the seal of a notary between the cities of Gubbio, Massa Marittima, San Marino and Sansepolcro, the only cities that retain the sense of continuity of the crossbow on Italian territory. On April 9th 1972, the city of Lucca was accepted into the Federation by virtue of its statutes and of a tradition kept alive by the rich historical and iconographical documentation. The first president was from San Marino. The idea to found an Italian Federation which counted the only crossbow associations (Societas Balistorium) came into being in "Castello Sforzesco" in Milan in June of 1962, when Gubbio, Massa Marittima, San Marino and Sansepolcro gathered in a impassioned tournament, won by the marksman Giuliano Galeotti of Massa Marittima, who for the first time ever, could be conferred the "King of the Crossbow" and wear the Golden Collar that was offered by the Association of the Antique Arms Enthusiasts.
One of the main aims of the statute of the Italian Crossbow Federation is the undertaking of the annual "National Tournament of the Antique Italian Crossbow". The marvellous costume display takes place every year in one of the five cities. The first National Tournament was performed in San Marino in 1966. 75 marksmen took part, fifteen for each representative. All marksmen competed for the team title, whereas the three best champions from each city qualified for the final presentation of the title "King of the Crossbow". The San Marino team has won 13 national team titles ( 8 of which were consecutive) and eigth individual titles.
